Grant Winners October 2005

Shaidy Characters: £500
Speakout!
Initially established by SHAID (Single Homeless Action Initiative in Dermentside) and managed by a SHAID worker, Shaidy Characters is a group of young people who have been clients of SHAID and aims to give a voice to socially excluded and homeless young people who want to use their experience constructively. This includes contributing to SHAID and other local services and providing a network of peer support. The grant will enable the group to hold a ‘speak out’- a forum in which young people will pose questions to professionals from services that provide for them.

Playurt: £500
Yurt
Playurt provides a space and service for toddlers and parents from Travellers sites from the South West. They offer various activities for pre-school children, the choices of which are influenced by the parents and children who use the facility. Playurt will use the grant to buy books that will be kept and used in the Yurt, along with other new play equipment that needs replacing, such as clay and sand.

The Allotment Group: £472
Allotment
The Allotment Group is made up of homeless people from the Mayday Trust’s Leighton Buzzard Project. The Group grows fruit and vegetables from seed for the Trust’s training kitchen and encourages other Mayday Trust residents to work outdoors and to become involved with gardening. The grant will go towards materials and a selection of seeds and herbs. This will further the group’s activities and increase their professionalism, leading to a stall at a local farmers market and turn a small allotment into a small market garden enterprise.

Marionettas: £500
Marionettas
Marionettas are a group of carnival artists, costume makers and puppeteers from the travelling community. They make their own puppets and walk-about costumes, both to perform and facilitate workshops. The workshops bring the community together and offer an opportunity for views to be expressed and creativity explored. The grant will go towards buying materials for puppets, creating storage space and to organise a tour. This will both further the community aspects of the project as well as provide the members of the Marionettas the opportunity to continue their work as travelling artists.

Weaveworld: £500
Water Bowser
Weaveworld consists of a group of craftspeople that live on travellers’ sites in Dorset and Somerset. They run workshops for participants of all ages, in weaving, spinning and plant dyes where the emphasis is on skill sharing and creativity. They will use the grant to pay for a water bowser. Water is vital for some of their activities, but is rarely available on their sites. The grant will also contribute to a fund for a solar panel, which will enable the group to work with more light and use a laptop in designing their workshops.

PAAD: £500
Info
Pavee Advice, Assist and Direct is a group that offers representation and advocacy for Irish travellers. This includes advice, support, police liaison and court representation, although primarily for Irish travellers it is open to all travelling people. The grant will pay for the hiring of a community hall every week, which will provide a permanent point in Kent where travellers can go to seek advice and help. The grant will also contribute to their publicity so Irish travellers know this service exists. PAAD hopes this model will be used in other parts of the UK.

One World Alternatives: £490
Garden tools
One World Alternatives are a group of women who intend to give disadvantaged and excluded people access to land through an allotment. They will teach and facilitate people in how to grow, store and preserve foods, as well as providing access to the allotments and the tools necessary to grow produce. Because the project is in its infancy the grant will go towards advertising and networking the project so more people can begin to benefit from their work.
The Roundabout: £500
Mic
The Roundabout is a voluntary group that aims to prevent and reduce homelessness amongst young people between 18-25 through active citizenship, learning opportunities and multimedia technology. Other than a home, they believe that the young people they work with lack activities to become involved in. The group have organized a band in a night shelter for some time, but with the grant are now able to buy equipment such as microphones, amplifiers and musical instruments. This will further their activities including gigs.
