Tool Kit are a community of 106 squatted flats based in a South East London Estate. They promote self-responsibility and self-help through sustainable living within the city. They are are mainly involved in creative activities although recently been more involved in community ventures such as litter clearance and recycling campaigns. The award will be spent on a set of communal tools, to enable people to do their own maintenance and repair work to plumbing, electricity and furniture.
Quay House: £500
Quayhouse is a self-help organisation run by and for people with mental health or substance misuse needs on the Isle of Wight. They run self-help groups and provide a range of activities from job clubs to exercise groups. The £500 will be used to purchase a digital camera and stationery materials to enable the group to produce their own newsletter..
The Communal: £500
A group of homeless people have access to a large room they call the ‘communal’ which they use for cooking, meeting and accessing the internet. They hold a weekly vegan café film night where we donate food and show activist films. With the £500, They have bought a small, efficient and relatively high output wood burning stove ‘the morso squirrel clean heat 1430.’ It will help us keep the space warm in a energy efficient and healthy way.
Up From the Streets: £500
Up From the Streets are a self-help group of homeless and ex-homeless people who offer:
1) advice to homeless people or those threatened with eviction or in insecure housing.
2) Support to the homeless with help with food and clothing etc.
3) Securing accommodation where possible .
The £500 has gone towards tools and materials to help them to continue their advice and support work.
Sutton Street Music and Recycling Project: £500
A group of travellers who want to raise awareness of environmental issues among the young people have got together to form the Sutton Street Music and Recycling Project. They run music workshops on DJ decks made from recycled materials and run from solar power, to show young people how much is possible when you know about DIY culture and show a positive alternative to capitalist consumerism. With the £500, they are purchasing a solar panel and a petrol to gas converter.
The C.I.A. Collective : £500
The aims of Contemporary Itinerant Artists (C.I.A) are to bring together nomadic artists for mutual support and inspiration. They provide a work space for artists to share equipment and materials and to hold exhibitions to display their work, promoting positive image of travellers. The £500 will enable the Collective to hold a series of exhibitions around the country this summer.metal work equipment so that they can run a series of workshops, continuing the success of their work with Cloud 10 youth project. The workshop is also used to create original crafts for sale in the community shop.
Giroscope: £500
Giroscope is a worker co-operative based in Hull. They buy dilapidated properties, renovate them and let them to people living in poverty and in housing need. They also provide opportunities for residents and others to gain valuable work experience and training in maintenance and building skills to help them develop their self esteem and employability. The £500, will go towards the cost of paying getting a professional website for the organisation.
